New from Micromech is a full mechatronic solution including a 86mm flange high torque motor and a motion controller/driver using the new outstanding coolStep™ technology for sensorless load dependent current control. This allows the first time an energy efficient operation of an open-loop stepper motor system. With the advanced stallGuard2™ feature the load of the motor can be detected with high resolution.
The PANdrive™ can be controlled via USB, CAN, RS232 or RS485 interface and the power supply, interface and the multi purpose I/Os can be connected with JST connectors. There are step/direction/enable inputs (with optical coupling); two inputs for stop switches (24V compatible), one input for reference/homing switch (24V compatible) and one shutdown input. The nominal supply voltage range is 24V to 48V. In addition there are 4 general purpose inputs, two 24v compatible and two pen collector.
There is an incremental encoder input (ABN, single ended) and two general purpose outputs (open collector). The new spreadCycle™ chopper allows the highest smoothness, as well as high-speed operation. The internal sensOstep™ encoder can be used to detect step loss or to control the target position and the PD86-1180 comes with the PC based software development environment TMCL-IDE for the Trinamic Motion Control Language (TMCL™).
Using predefined TMCL™ high level commands like ‘move to position’ or ‘constant rotation’ a rapid and fast development of motion control applications is guaranteed. Communication traffic is kept very low since all time critical operations, e.g. ramp calculation are performed on board. The TMCL™ programme can be stored in the on board EEPROM for stand-alone operation and the firmware of the module can be updated via the serial interface. In addition as an optional CANopen firmware is available.
The motor is 5.5A, flange size 86mm (NEMA34), shaft diameter 12.7mm, length 31.75mm with D-cut.
The PD86-1180 features up to 256 times microstepping / 51200 pos./rev, memory for 2048 TMCL™ commands, stallGuard2™ sensorless high resolution motor load detection, coolStep™ load dependent current control and spreadCycle™ chopper for improved smoothness and high speed operation. Other clever and useful features include, microPlyer™ internal microstep multiplier (16 to 256 µSteps) for lower frequency on step input, integrated absolute sensOstep™ encoder (max. 256 cpr), automatic ramp generation in hardware and on the fly alteration of motion parameters position, velocity and acceleration.
These controls are provided throughout most of TRINAMIC’s motion control elements all part of the philosophy to provide an economic and compact design to aid the engineering processes. As the motion control is carried out in the hardware and not the CPU, there is of course a considerable saving in capacity resulting in the software being kept simple thereby saving on engineering and service costs.

| This is not just another mounted miniature bearing; this is a Spyraflo pillow block bearing |
|
The main feature of these new pillow blocks, now available from Micromech, is that there is no other ball bearing that accommodates a shaft diameter of less than 12mm. Previously an engineer had to fabricate a mount that incorporates a very high precision bearing mounting hole, the Spyraflo solution has removed this problem, all that need to be done is simply screw the housing into place.
Until now there has been a void in the marketplace for precision mounted miniature ball bearings, with existing mounted ball bearings typically available only in shaft diameters no smaller than 12mm. The new Spyraflo mounted; miniature ball bearings will meet the increasing demands by design engineers for an economical and precision bearing mounting method for smaller shaft sizes. This relieves engineers of the responsibility and work of having to design and produce specific mounting configurations for miniature ball bearings. In the past when considering the use of miniature bearings for an assembly, one of the critical design elements was how, precisely, the bearings could be mounted. Typically, the mount had to be precision machined, particularly when using high-performance miniature bearings. Until now, no mounted bearing option existed when it came to the use of miniature ball bearings, so manufacturing/assembling people were required to produce some form of precision mount. The new Spyraflo bearings eliminate this task effectively and economically. The new Spyraflo product consists of high-quality stainless steel ABEC 3 precision Japanese ball bearings mounted in a precision-machined, sintered aluminium pillow block housing. Initially, they are being offered as non-aligning types, primarily because they are designed for use in more precise applications. These miniature ball bearings will be offered and metric sizes from 4mm to 10mm (inch sizes available) shaft diameters, as double shielded bearings that are pre-greased for life. The aluminium body and stainless steel, together with the double shield, give the new bearings a level of corrosion resistance that makes them the ideal choice for food and wash down applications as well.
