<p><img alt="MX45S" src="http://www.micromech.co.uk/dir_news/images_2013/mx45s.jpg" width="170" height="152" align="right" />Designed for today’s 24/7 production demands, the MX45 series has redefined ‘high-throughput automation’ in the world of miniature positioners. Typical areas of application for the stages are research, fibre optics, photonics, electronics and biomedical processes.</p>
<p>The exceptional features of the stages are an ultra compact profile, just 35mm high and 80mm wide, with travels of 5, 15 and 25mm. Designed with anti-cage creep crossed roller bearings, the MX45S allows users to position up to 7kg of normal load on the stage’s three standard travel lengths of 5,15 and 25mm. They can be supplied with a high efficiency leadscrew or a high precision ground ballscrew, both of which are capable of producing 40N of thrust and reaching linear velocities of 20 and 30mm/s respectively.</p>
<p><img alt="mx45s" src="http://www.micromech.co.uk/dir_news/images_2013/mx45s_1.jpg" width="174" height="170" align="left" />The leadscrew drive employs a PTFE-coated screw with a preloaded nut to deliver extremely smooth and quiet linear motion. A choice of two leadscrews allows the user to match the desired mix of velocity and resolution, in order to best match the application’s requirements.</p>
<p>The ballscrew drive is available in a 1mm screw offering the user 3μm bi-directional repeatability and 24hour continuous operation (100 % duty cycle).</p>
<p>There are ballscrew or leadscrew drive options, anti-cage creep crossed roller bearings, axial thrust of up to 40N and a maximum velocity of 30mm/s. They are stepper motor driven, have an option of digital limit/home sensor pack and there is a further option of rotary or linear encoders.</p>
<p>Accommodating multi-axis platforms they are ideal for either normal or cleanroom environments.</p>

<p><strong>Application or solution</strong> To supply motion control components, i.e. the control system and feedback components for a prototype build of two 5-axis insertion devices used for ‘wiggling’ or ‘undulating’ high energy light beam sources to produce the ‘useable’ beams for beam-line research.</p>
<p><strong>Scope of overall contract</strong> To specify servomotors, gearheads and feedback encoders then build the VME networked motion control and PLC racks. To also provide software and then commission the prototypes.</p>
<p><strong>Description of equipment and services supplied</strong> The main brushless servo drives and motors were selected from the Parker Compax range, the gearheads from Alpha Getriebebau (now Wittenstein) and the feedback encoders sourced from Heidenhain. The control PLC was from Omron and the motion controller supplied by Oregon Micro Systems (now Prodex). All the control equipment was installed into Canon 2000mm high equipment racks and the Diamond engineers required all the main connecting cables to be supplied. The Diamond Light Source engineers designed the mechanical design for the physical insertion device ID equipment. A Spanish supplier TTM inValencia undertook the construction of these units. Once the physical builds <img alt="DLS" src="http://www.micromech.co.uk/dir_news/images_2013/dls_proj_2.JPG" width="250" height="384" align="left" hspace="5" vspace="5" />were available at Diamond’s site Micromech Systems engineers worked with DLS engineers to validate and commission the IDs ready for integration within the main synchrotron ring building.</p>
<p><strong>Merits of solution provided</strong> This was an extremely complex motion control requiring software routines to modulate the vertical position and angle of two very large magnetic array beam-jaws between which the main light beam passes. The magnetic attraction force between the two jaws when at close range are in the order of tonnes. The beam position had to be controlled to accuracy of a few microns and with very fast response, while the absolute position and tilt had to be monitored continually. At times the upper beam was required to track and move in synchronisation with the lower beam.               The power capability of the Parker Servomotors combined with the precision and stiffness of the Alpha gear heads made such control feasible. Micromech originally sized and specified these key components.</p>
<p>Partners in collaboration on contract Observatory Sciences Ltd were sub-contracted to produce EPICS drivers (Synchrotron Network command software) for the control system.</p>

<strong>Palletising robots made to measure</strong></p>
<p>Speed and flexibility are naturally the most important factors in a palletising operation but short throughput times at high travel and positioning speeds can be achieved using palletising robots. Flexibility primarily demands an open control system, which offers clear text dialogues, making it easy to programme for various tasks.</p>
<p>An industrial computer acts as a Man-Machine-Interface where a graphical display of the approaching palletising samples on a screen allows for easy and comfortable programming. The sequential programmes are generated and monitored automatically by the integrated, fully digital servo control unit. To provide reliable transport for pallets, packaging and work-pieces made from every conceivable material in a wide range of shapes; the palletising systems are equipped with application-specific grippers. If various tasks need to be handled in an automatic sequence, gripper changeover systems give short re-tooling times and ensure maximum flexibility.</p>

<strong>Shelf-picking units</strong></p>
<p>Any modern inventory management system capable of coping efficiently with stock movement needs to have good quality high-bay stock handling equipment. Nowadays cost-effective, automated high bay stock handling systems are able to deal with a broad range of tasks and require very little intervention by human operators. Here are a few examples: retrieving small parts to make up an order, moving raw semi-finished materials into and out of stock, perhaps via buffer stock areas located beside production, and storing documentation and other data in archives.</p>
<p>In order to achieve rapid stock transfer, high-bay stock handling equipment must be able to cover extended distances at high speeds and at a high dynamic. The Parker high-bay stock handling systems meet these requirements, and are equipped with belt or rack drive units powered by high-performance servo motors and fully digital servo controllers. Telescopic or push/_pull-type lifting systems are able to move a tremendously wide variety of units into and out of stock. Integrated PC control units enable goods moving into and out of stock in the automated high bay storage areas to be monitored and documented reliably and since they run under the Windows operating system, they have no problem in being incorporated into standard computer networks (e.g. Novell via Ethernet). This capability enables them to exchange data with supervisory host systems, demonstrating the outstanding benefits of a systems-based philosophy. The ‘highbay’ stock handling equipment has the in-house material flow situation firmly under control.</p>

<p><strong>Episode 4: Food Dispenser and Packager</strong></p>
<p><strong>A mechanical cam indexer was limiting production throughput and a quick changeover for different container dimensions and volumes was crucial. A new system had to be small, interface its motion control with a specified PLC and have machine safety and e-stop recovery.</strong></p>
<p>The OEM makes a variety of equipment to serve the packaging industry and this application (rotary dial indexer) required 3 axes of servo to perform a filling operation of food into either 1 or 2.5kg containers which are then sealed with an ultrasonic welder. The main benefit of the solution is to gain 3 axes of motion control while keeping the original Micrologix PLC platform as a logic and HMI interface device. The MP2300Siec features Ethernet/IP protocol support which allows this connection. By using a servo to drive the dial plate the relationship between index/dwell can be infinitely variable, and therefore maximizes the throughput of the machine even when changing container sizes. Additional servo control via linear actuators on the container de-nester and product dispenser allows instant changeover with a minimum of mechanical parts. Programmable volume, speed and drawback on the dispense pump improves fill accuracy and machine throughput.</p>
<p>The performance achieved was a throughput of forty 1kg fills/min and twenty-five 2.5kg fills/min, the index speed is 0.5 sec with an accuracy of &lt;= 7 arc/min. The differentiating features of this solution were the prewritten communication for the Allen Bradley Micrologix PLC, programmable fill settings and variable index/dwell ratio of servo driven dial plate.</p>
<p>The resulting benefits of this solution are a proven core code reducing commissioning, much reduced project risk, improved product size flexibility and fill accuracy. There was also greater throughput when switching to larger container size, increased dwell time, flexible number of stops and reversing is made possible.</p>

<p>Surgeons in London have carried out the first &#8216;warm liver&#8217; transplant using an organ which was &#8216;kept alive&#8217; at body temperature in a machine. Usually donor livers are kept on ice, but many become damaged as a result. The patient, 62-year-old Ian Christie from Devon, is doing well after the operation at King&#8217;s College Hospital.</p>
<p>The technology was developed by scientists at Oxford University who hope it could increase the number of livers available for transplant. Prof Peter Friend Co-inventor and surgeon quotes “it provides an environment where the donor liver hardly knows it has left the body”.</p>
<p><strong>Its inventors are an engineer and a transplant surgeon.</strong></p>
<p>Prof Constantin Coussios of the Department of Engineering Science has been working on the project for 15 years in partnership with Prof Peter Friend, of the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences.</p>
<p>After being removed from the donor, the liver is placed in the machine and tubes are connected to the main blood vessels. Oxygenated blood and nutrients are pumped through the liver which continues to function and produce bile.</p>
<p>Prof Peter Friend said: &#8220;It provides an environment where the donor liver hardly knows it has left the body. Instead of cooling it to slow its metabolism we keep it functioning at normal temperature and with oxygen and nutrition.&#8221;</p>
<p>At present many donor livers are rejected for transplantation because they are damaged. Some have been deprived of oxygen while others contain too much fat and do not survive the cooling process.</p>
<p>The Oxford inventors say their machine allows the liver to recover from damage it has sustained and enables medical staff to test the viability of the organ to see whether it is likely to work before being transplanted into the patient.</p>
<p>Ian Christie, the first patient to receive a liver using the new technique contracted hepatitis C from a blood transfusion 25 years ago, before blood could be screened for the infection. He developed liver cirrhosis and was told last year that without a transplant he might have about 18 months to live.</p>
<p>Mr Christie, who had the surgery last month, said: &#8220;I feel very proud and lucky to have been part of this medical advance. My health is better than it&#8217;s been for years and I feel I can go on now instead of thinking that life is finished for me.&#8221; A second patient who received a liver using the same technique is also said to be doing well.</p>
<p>The livers given to Mr Christie and the other patient were preserved for five and nine hours respectively, but the Oxford team believes its system could allow donor livers to be maintained for much longer.</p>
<p><strong>This will save lives</strong></p>

<p>About 700 liver transplants are carried out in the UK each year, but more than 100 patients a year die while on the waiting list.</p>
<p>Prof Coussios said: &#8220;In experiments we have shown we can preserve a liver and monitor its function outside the body for periods up to 24 hours. By contrast livers kept on ice have to be transplanted with 10-12 hours at most.&#8221;</p>
<p>If livers could be preserved for longer it would allow teams to organise transplant surgery more effectively and to find the ideal recipient.</p>
<p>King&#8217;s College Hospital performs more than 200 liver transplants each year making it the largest unit in Europe.</p>
<p><strong>European trial</strong></p>
<p>Wayel Jassem, transplant surgeon who performed both operations, said: &#8220;I was impressed to see how quickly each liver started to function following the transplant. This technology has the potential to be hugely significant and could save lives.&#8221; But the inventors in Oxford and the transplant team in London stress it is too early to draw any firm conclusions as to the benefits of &#8216;warm liver&#8217; transplantation. A further eight patients will receive livers using the new technique at King&#8217;s College Hospital. Following this initial safety trial a broader study across three European countries is planned. It may be several years before liver specialists can tell whether the technique has proven benefits.</p>
<p>Five years ago Oxford University set up a spin-out company, OrganOx, to commercialise the technology. It has financial support from the Royal Society and a venture capital fund. The company hopes its device will get European approval via a CE mark later this year.</p>
<p>The concept of keeping donor organs at body temperature and preserving their function is also being tested in heart and lung transplants.</p>

<p><strong>ECI / EQI Absolute Inductive Rotary Encoders</strong></p>
<p>These absolute rotary encoders use a printed track inductive coupling technique between rotor and stator. They are extremely rugged in construction, and so are suitable for industrial applications and can be run at speeds of up to 15,000 rpm.</p>
<p>They have no integral bearing so are ideal for mounting on an extension shaft of a machine or motor drive system which has an existing bearing supporting it.</p>
<p>They are offered in three different body sizes:</p>
<p>37mm dia x 23mm long with 6.0mm blind hollow bore</p>
<p>65mm dia x 29mm long with taper hollow bore</p>
<p>92mm dia x 18.5mm long with 50mm hollow through bore</p>
<p>The signal interface is EnDat 2.1 with incremental tracks provided in 16 or 32 signal periods per rev. EnDat protocol is compatible with AQ Biss and Heidenhain can offer support with system integration designs using AQ Biss circuit elements.</p>
<p>With position values per rev totalling 524,288 (19 Bits) the EQI 1331 has a counting range of 2,147,483,600 before rollover.</p>
<p>These encoders are not normally only offered to be supplied in single units due to the level of support required. They can be purchased for service supply in the case of breakdown but otherwise only for volume applications. For requirements in excess of 100pcs per order, with a committed call-off, the volume pricing for EQI 1130 can typically be just £120.00 per unit.</p>

<p><strong>ERO 1200 and ERO 1400 Optical Incremental Encoders</strong></p>
<p>These Incremental Rotary encoders are designed for volume OEM applications, which require minimal installation space is available They offer line counts up to 1500per rev (6000 counts post quadrature) and can be driven at speeds up to 30,000 rpm.</p>
<p><strong>ERO 1200</strong> is an open assembly for installations within an overall housing such as motor housing. Dimensions are: 52mm dia x 30mm long with 10 or 12mm rotor bore.</p>
<p><strong>ERO 1400</strong> is enclosed within a plastic cover cap and supplied with an integral mounting/spacing aid. Dimensions are: 39mm dia x 20mm long with cover clip in place. Shaft bores are 4, 6 or 8mm.</p>
<p><strong>Inductive Rotary Encoders for Resolver Systems, and with a Higher Resolution</strong></p>
<p>The inductive rotary encoders of the HEIDENHAIN ExI 1100 series are now available in versions whose mating dimensions is the same as those of common types of resolvers. Depending on the respective applications and accuracy requirements, inductive or optical absolute encoders are now possible as high-resolution alternatives to resolvers. These encoders are easy to mount and inexpensive, and are dedicated to applications that require a high degree of reliability and durability.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the HEIDENHAIN ExI 1100 rotary encoders with EnDat 2.1 interface feature an improved inductive scanning method, with which the single turn resolution was increased to 18 bits (262,144 position values per revolution). This results in a higher control quality of the drive.</p>
<p>Servo drives with inductive rotary encoders enjoy advantages over those using resolvers in terms of positioning accuracy, speed stability and control dynamics. This is made possible by the greater control bandwidth and a significantly higher number of signal periods for the formation of the single-turn position value. The position value is produced by electronics already integrated in the encoder, and is transferred as purely digital information to the higher-level electronics over the fast bi-directional EnDat interface. As an option, the information can be transferred as an analogue signal. An integrated read and write EEPROM makes user parameters available in the subsequent electronics at all times, enabling the encoder and its environment to self-configure over the synchronous serial interface.</p>
<p>The encoder’s real multi-turn capability frees the system from the need to be “homed” after power interruptions or switch-on. Conventional battery-supported systems requiring regular maintenance are no longer needed. Alarm and diagnostic functions ensure high system availability rates.</p>

<p><strong>Application or solution</strong><br />
A technology upgrade was required for thirty-one motion control axes concerned with positioning various sample stages and beam slits. The system needed 16 small servomotors and 15 stepper motors.</p>
<p><strong>Scope of overall contract</strong><br />
To propose a complete turnkey solution of controls and mechanical arrangements which could be rapidly installed and commissioned during the summer shutdown period. The proposed design was to build a two-rack system, devise motion software, test, install and finally commission.</p>

<p><strong>Description of equipment and services supplied</strong><br />
Due to limited space in the beam-line hutch it was necessary the control be split into two parts. A large free standing cubicle to be mounted on the hutch roof and a small 16-axis slave servo control to be mounted on the wall of the hutch inside. Power supply conditioning was also required due to previous experience caused by high energy noise problems. To control the 31 axes Micromech engineers used four powerful Parker 6K8 Ethernet motion controllers. The servo drives employed were from Maxon and the stepper drives from Stogra.</p>
<p><strong>Merits of solution provided</strong><br />
Micromech devised a special stepper driven actuator using a linear thrust stepper to actuate an existing Newport slit mechanism previously powered by a DC servo gear-motor. Encoder signals were converted from single ended to differential to improve noise immunity. The Ethernet front end enabled the scientists to command all 31 axes direct using their existing beam line control ‘front – end’ software platform. The system was built and tested at Micromech’s works and demonstrated to the client for acceptance, before delivery to site. Installation was simple due to the modular system and having pre-made cables.</p>
