Incredibly cost effective ready-to-use CNC Machine

The ICV 4030 CNC machine is a compact, tabletop machine in the Isel proven chassis design, which is constructed in a modular maintenance-friendly way and is ready to be connected to the mains. A controller including control computer with WINDOWS® operating system and safety devices are built into the machine case.

ICV 4030With a base of just 780 x 835mm the affordable CNC machine provides a traversing range of 395 x 300 x 95mm. A sliding hood that opens upward offering both safety and a lower noise protects the working area. In its design the engineers took great care to minimise resonance and vibration behaviour thus guaranteeing high quality working results. Due to its useful, convenient front sliding door, the machine can easily be operated while the operator is sitting in front of it.

All the linear axes of the ICV4030 are driven by servomotors with easy to maintain drive modules. A four-axis control unit integrated into the machine controls all drives and electronic modules of the CNC machine. This is a CAN controller iMC with 3 drive control modules, integrated control computer, I/O module, safety circuit, standstill monitoring and 48V/1000W power supply. It also incorporates a remote maintenance module providing user-friendly fault analysis.
Note: an external monitor and a keyboard are required.

The machine table is highly accurate with surface-milled precision and T-slot profiles providing optimum clamping capabilities for a wide range of work piece holders and fixtures. The table has a travel speed of 200mm/s and repeatability accuracy of 0.02mm.

Various machining units clamping systems, measuring fixtures and accessories extend the basis machine to a complete system for most various applications and branches.

Form, fill and sealThe strong demand for coffee pads required increased product output as these single portion sachets represent a convenient alternative to conventional filter coffee that have become very popular. As a result of this high demand from the market, coffee producers were on the lookout for even better machines with a much higher throughput. The production process is technically demanding, as the pads must be formed from a strip of fabric, precisely filled, sealed and punched out.

A market leading machine manufacturer therefore used a drive and control solution optimised for the development of their high performance machines in order to precisely synchronise up to 25 servo drives via an electronic line shaft. The movements of the individual drives were implemented via powerful electronic cam functions. Pneumatic-driven auxiliary axes were driven via dead time compensated electronic cam switches for maximum performance. Due to the modular architecture, the number of servo driven dosing lanes can be varied to meet the needs of the customer with optional machine modules.

This resulting high performance is more than impressive and with considerably reduced down times the machine now produces up to 800 pads per minute, an amazing 48,000 pads per hour thus ensuring optimum plant efficiency for the end customer.

The successful introduction of the new machine into the market meant customers are delighted with the outcome, far higher production, less maintenance and of course much lower costs.

Meet the team – Gina Warwick

Hi I’m Gina. Yes I’m still here. I have worked for Micromech Ltd since November 1988 in accounts and in recent years I have become the Credit Controller – it’s a challenging job. Now my boss calls me the Rottweiler, but my bark is definitely worse than my bite.
I live locally, (only ten minute walk to work) and will have been married to Martin for thirty-nine years in 2012. We have three daughters Tanya aged 37,married to Adds for 5 years,  Nicola 35 and Carla 32 and married to Steve 2 & half  years. Plus two gorgeous grandchildren, Issabelle born 11th Nov. 2010 and Zach born 9th Dec. 2010.  

My husband Martin  is in sales and sells Sola Panels, he loves sport and these days although he doesn’t play as much as he used to I could still class myself as a golf and cricket widow.
Our daughters are all very clever and have degrees. Our eldest lives near Oxford and is now a full time Mum to Zach. Our middle daughter moves about the world teaching Biology, and is at the moment in Vietnam, a very beautiful country. Last but not least our youngest, who is Mum to Issabelle, works for a housing association, and has had to return to work, but her husband, who is a teachers assistant at a special needs school for children with mental and physical handicaps  look after Issabelle for three days a week, and his parents have her for two days.

My hobbies have changed over the years, when the girls were young I did a lot of needlework and knitting, now its cooking, gardening, reading and going to the theatre. We did have a lovely collie dog ‘Braker’ up till ten years ago so I did lots and lots of walking. I miss the exercise!

We both love to travel and in the last few years have been to the USA many times, also Canada, Thailand, Turks and Caicos and Vietnam and this year we are going to Shri-Lanka.  We also belong to a Twinning Ass. Gt Dunmow with Dordan (which is SW of Paris) we meet up with the French twice a year.

The EMI 22 magnetic incremental encoder functions fine underwater

An Aquarium company had a problem and came to Micromech – whose engineers recommended the Eltra EMI 22 for an underwater application.  Compact dimensions and being able to operate across a wide temperature range from -25 to +125 °C were other crucial parameters.emi 22

Further important features of the EM series are: no need for physical contact between encoder and motor shaft; high resolution and precision; high working speed (max. rotation speed 10,000 rpm); excellent mechanical robustness; and very easy mounting.

Of course, most important in the case of this application was the need for a high enclosure rating of IP68 and with the body, housing and magnet-carrier material made of aluminium (D11S UNI 9002/5) a long life is assured.

The EMI 22 is very robust, withstanding shocks of 50G/11ms and vibration 10G/10 to 2000 Hz, yet resolution is incremental up to 2048 p.p.r. The current consumption without load is 100mA maximum and maximum load current is 15mA for channel.

Besides this special application the EMI series encoders are also ideal in such areas as electric motors, marine industry, iron/steel industry and textile machines. In addition they are well suited in many other tough environments including: woodworking, paper working, glass-working, marble-working machinery, automation and process control fields.

For high performance in a tight integrated motion application, the KBM™ frameless brushless motor is the answer

Introduced by Micromech is the Kollmorgen new family of frameless, brushless motors derived from the proven and extensive portfolio of Kollmorgendesigns. They are available in fourteen sizes for low or high voltage operation delivering torque, power and speed, within a cost-effective package and have a compact footprint. They give the system designer high flexibility in specifying a motor that fits the specific performance and dimensional requirements of the application but without incurring expensive engineering or other capital fees. Their advanced electromagnetic designs deliver maximum torque density which minimises required motor space envelope. They have extremely smooth rotation with minimal cogging, low total harmonic distortion (THD) and a broad operating speed range with rapid acceleration.

Kollmorgen KBMOEMs tasked with designing a highly optimised and tightly integrated machine or device will find KBM motors to be an excellent choice due to their unique design, which inherently improves mechanical compliance. They dramatically reduce the parts count; and improve performance through the use of powerful direct-coupled electro-magnetics, yet within a lightweight and compact form factor.
When directly coupled to the machine’s load, KBM motors offer exceptional direct drive rotary benefits over traditional mechanical transmission systems by eliminating the compliant components of the system, such as gearboxes, timing belts and pulleys. KBM motors increase a machine throughput, reduce noise and reduce maintenance requirements to extend a machine’s useful life. These benefits are provided in a compact, yet high-performance footprint, which allows OEMs to design smaller, more cost effective machines. These motors out-perform through their lower maintenance and repair costs, shorter machine downtimes and longer service life, plus their level of efficiency is at least 10% greater than that of mechanical transmission solutions such as gearbox and timing belt systems.

They are offered in standard 14 frame sizes ranging from 60mm to 825mm diameter, 7 lengths and over 150 pre-designed motor windings, and 240 VAC or 480 VAC operation. To customer’s specification, additional motor windings can be offered to allow optimised performance at lower voltages such as 12 or 24 VDC. Each frame size is available with up to 3 or 4 stack lengths and feature fully encapsulated stator windings for superior thermal and environmental performance. Internal windings are rated for continuous duty operation up to 155°C (311°F), enabling highly reliable performance even under extreme duty and temperature conditions.

Rare-earth neodymium Iron Boron magnets provide high continuous torque ranging from 1.45 Nm up to 3445 Nm and peak torque ranging from 4.91 Nm up to 12,812 Nm for maximum power ranging from 550 W up to 18.5 KW within the smallest motor package. They also boast maximum excellent speeds available at rated power from 105 RPM up to 18,600 RPM. They are capable of driving high inertia loads with large inertia ratios between the rotor and load, also score points for dynamics, with outstanding acceleration and deceleration times which contribute to maximising machine performance.

In addition rotor hub dimensions can be customised within certain constraints enabling machine builders to tailor the KBM to their unique physical requirements. Metal retaining bands to enable fail-safe motor operation protect the rotor magnets. Furthermore they include an integral PTC thermistor (avalanche-type) so that overload protection meets UL/CE agency compliance guidelines.

Their design and performance attributes make KBM frameless brushless motors an attractive option in any number of medical, metal processing and cutting, aerospace and defence and oil and gas equipment applications that demand a highly optimised and tightly integrated motion solution. They are also extremely well suited for use in semiconductor and electronic assembly, renewable energy and vehicle electrification applications. The KBM series is the result of many years of motor design and development expertise to offer a power-dense, modular and flexible set of motors, that are highly cost effective and available in a lead time of 4 weeks. Many component options and modifications are available to help OEMs quickly develop cost-effective machines with motion solutions that are optimised for the best package size and performance.
