Application or solution A turnkey solution for a programmable coating-dipping process, which included Ethernet interface, for delicate visual display units (VDUs) was required. It also required an option for un-interruptable power supply (UPS) as a crucial element. Micromech engineers developed and produced a visual basic user screen package to the customer’s specification.

Scope of overall contract To propose a system, design the mechanics and electrical build, test, demonstrate and deliver the equipment.

Description of equipment and services supplied The mechanical build consisted of a modular aluminum linear actuator structure with vertical- and cross-axis ball-screw driven units. It was decided that stepper motors with encoder feedback would be ideal for the drive system. A Trio MC204 motion controller unit with a two axis stepper command was chosen for the programmable motion process. The Client’s PC was to be connected via Ethernet for direct instruction for the individual dipping processes.

Merits of solution provided This was a complete turnkey system with test software and user manual, ready to run once accepted and delivered to site. The system was expandable for more axes if required, and importantly, the user can develop their own bespoke motion profile software.

Micromech is pleased to announce the arrival of not one but two single cable systems for servomotor and drive systems. Our two major motion suppliers have virtually simultaneously produced this important development for customers so improving performance reliability and cutting costs

Robust resolver based encoder systems have been proven for several years in many drive systems and Kollmorgen has been pioneering the advance towards the digital resolver; bringing to market the innovation that combines the benefits of a robust analogue technology with the advantages of digital encoder systems. Parker HIPERFACE DSL Single Cable Servo Drive Systems
The single cable servo drive system from Parker is a combination of the low inertia servomotor SME and the triple axis servo drive TPD-M based on the Hiperface DSL® digital feedback technology.

The encoder feedback communication is fully integrated into the motor power cable and thus no separate feedback cable between drive and motor is required.

The new feedback system is a purely digital encoder communication protocol with exceptional performance. The absolute position determination, a resolution of up to 20 bit per turn, as well as 4096 maximum rotations, is unique in its class. The System is completed by the multi-axis servo drive TPD-M which represents one of the most compact solutions on the market giving the possibility of controlling up to three single cable SME servo motors with one 50 mm drive module. Therefore, the single cable servo drive system is a bespoke solution to provide machine builders with lower cabling and installation cost and the possibility to reduce control panel size and machine footprint.

The Triple Axis Drive TPD-M is exactly what it says on the casing, it’s a one, two and three axis drive

Available from Micromech, the Parker TPD-M is the first servo drive integrating three servo power stages in a single housing. In addition to reduced purchasing and operating costs the user profits from a variety of new installation possibilities and enhanced flexibility.

The TPD-M servo drive was especially designed for OEM packaging machinery construction; it can however also be advantageously used in many other centralised automation structures incorporating a large number of servo drives. Another major benefit is their capability to support a range of the most common motors including synchronous / asynchronous motors, direct drives, torque motors, linear servomotors and voice coil motors.

For communication the drive incorporates all common fieldbus interfaces – an essential feature of open systems; CAN / CANopen, EtherCAT, Powerlink (on request) and also SERCOS III (on request). The feedback systems can be resolver, sine-cosine (single-/multiturn), hyperface interface, EnDat Interface, hall sensors both analogue and digital, rotary and linear encoders.

The TPD-M servo drive has high flexibility being based on the free power stage adaption to the corresponding servo motor power within the scope of the available vectorial device sum current, which can be offered in the range between 2 to 30 Amperes. The power stages are operated on a central mains module and are available as single axis, 2 axis or 3 axis versions.

The resulting technical highlights of the 3-axis design offers advantages in overall size and miniaturisation and therefore cost and space reduction, thanks to the reduced cabinet size. There are further purchasing cost savings as the compact device design uses less components (housing, electronics, plugs, connectors, heat dissipater and cable) and reduced number of cables for device to device connection and for communication (USB). Furthermore there is the simplicity of the central use of filter and braking resistor.

There are even operating savings of energy and environment as the speed-controlled fan ensures continually optimised energy consumption adapted to actual requirements and the DC intermediate circuit coupling permits efficient energy exchange between the axes. There are even more savings as the small size means reduced costs for packaging material and transport.

Finally, the costs are held down for planning, set-up and maintenance overheads, the TPD-M being an individual device for different power stage configurations and the simple device exchange, due to a pluggable SD Card holding all operation relevant information. During set-up the lighter weight per servo drive simplifies handling and error rate due to reduced wiring. Lastly, ‘much simplified’ is the stock holding because of the greatly reduced number of hardware variants.
