The design of each high-precision linear system or positioning table begins with the selection of the mechanical and electrical components that make up the final system.

There are many factors to be taken into consideration that influnce a system design and lead to the highest possible accuracy and repeatability. Factors include bearing type, materials and surface treatment, stiffness and stability of the system, encoder type, style of assembly, etc.

PM BearingsFurthermore, in order to design and build the optimum system it is essential to understand the environment in which the system is to ultimately work. Quite often measurements made during clean room assembly and test are found to deviate when the system is placed in its final operating location. When it comes to high accurate positioning stages, factors that apply outside a clean room environment are often overlooked.

PM BearingsYears of experience in the field of high precision positioning have taught PM-Bearings engineers the importance of environmental factors that must be considered during the design phase. Temperature of the working environment and the preload on the rails must be taken into account. Temperature differences (even body temperature) can cause deviations in high-precision systems affecting its characteristics.

The piezoelectric motors (an electro-mechanical drive system that converts the limited movement of a piezoelectric element into an unlimited translational motion) employed in a PM piezo positioning stage enable a backlash free linear motion with nanometer accuracy. The PM-Bearings Piezo positioning stages (available as plug-and-play) are equipped with an optical encoder with resolutions down to 10 nanometers.

Versatile linear actuators to make life easy

The Isel ballscrew driven LF series linear actuators are available in three sizes, two of which have a twin bearing rails/carriages and using standard mounting brackets allow every conceivable XY or XYZ configuration in the varying sizes to be achieved.

They are available with integrated belt drives or direct drive motors, stepper or servo can be fitted and the LF5 or LF6 allow the belt drive variant to be mounted between the linear slides inside the aluminium profile thus making a compact, aesthetically good assembly.
The anodised aluminium profile is W 225 x H 75 mm, W 150 x H 75 mm or 75mm square and available in stroke lengths of up to 2930mm; the profile edges are sealed with an abrasive – resistant covering. Clamping surfaces and profile bases are all plane milled.

Aluminium die-cast end plates are prepared either for flange-mounted direct drive modules or lateral belt drive modules, the slide blocks are also aluminium 2 x 70 mm long or 200 mm long, clearance free adjustable and with central lubrication.

The ball screw pitches can be 2.5/4/5/10/20 mm and the carriages sit on four (two on LF4) precision steel shafts Ø 12 h6, material Cf53, hardness 60 ± 2 HRC, the driving collar is steel fitted with sealed angular contact ball bearings.

Black powder-coated aluminium profile is an option, also are electromagnetic brakes, limit switches to give repeatability of ± 0.02 mm and asteel slide block assembly kit for limit switches.

The flexibility and performance of the LF series actuators make them ideal for machine tool and high duty applications.

PM Bearings introduces a new family to their existing ringslide type RPM. As per the existing range they have added the RPM Xtrm with 2, 3 and 4 meters of diameter. This can be used for angular precision motion and all types can be combined together also for 360 degrees motion with the same high precision RPM Xtrm ringslide series. A new bearing family for precision rotary and angular motion enable the user to take higher trust and moment loadings while guaranteeing high precision, longer service lifetime and very low coefficient of friction. AKMH stainless steel motors are supplied with AKD servo amplifiers matched to the application. The standard series AKD drives are supplied for mounting centrally in a control cabinet and the AKD-N series drives with the AKD-C power supply module is supplied when mounting the drive close to the motor. A decentralised servo system is particularly beneficial in machines with multiple spatially distributed axes.

AKMH servo motors are particularly efficient when combined a suitable washdown gearhead, the AquaTrue series from Thomson for example, see below.
