Kollmorgen Linear Motors

Kollmorgen direct drive linear motors take performance to a new level with high throughput, accuracy, and zero maintenance.

Overview

DDL motors are frameless permanent magnet, three phase brushless servomotors. A linear motor is essentially a rotary motor laid out flat.

The Kollmorgen DDL product line consists of two construction types, IL series ironless (slotless) and ICH ironcore.

Ironcore motors provide the highest force per frame size. Kollmorgen ICH motors feature an anti-cogging design, which yields extremely smooth operation.

Ironless motors have no attractive force between its components and zero cogging for the ultra smooth motion and the highest dynamics.

The two main elements of a permanent magnet brushless rotary motor are a stator (primary coils) and a rotor (secondary or rotating magnets).

In a brushless linear motor the rotor is rolled out flat to become a magnet track. The stator (primary coils) of the rotary motor is rolled out flat to become the coil assembly (sometimes called the forcer).

Characteristics of each DDL motor type:

Each motor type provides characteristics and features making them suited to specific applications.

Ironcore motors have coils wound on silicon steel laminations, which maximises the generated force with a single sided magnet way. Using an innovative electromagnetic design, Kollmorgen ICH linear motors have the highest rated force per size, a high Km motor constant (providing low thermal losses), and low cogging forces without the need for skewed magnets.
The high thrust forces possible with ICH motors make them ideal for accelerating and moving high masses, and maintaining stiffness during machining or process forces.

Ironless motors have no slots for the coils to be wound on. This results in zero cogging, a very light mass, and no attractive forces between the coil assembly and the magnet way. These characteristics make IL motors perfect for applications requiring very low bearing friction, high acceleration of lighter loads, and for maximising constant velocity, even at very low speeds. Modular magnet ways consist of a double row of magnets which maximise the generated thrust force and provide a flux return path for the magnetic circuit.
