Implement your servo controller in a day with the TMC4671

Micromech announces the TMC4671 from Trinamic – the world’s first fully integrated servo controller IC providing field-oriented control for BLDC/PMSM and 2-phase stepper motors, as well as DC motors and voice coils.

Trinamic - TMC4671The trend towards automating everything around us has increased the demand for energy efficient control even of the smallest motors, so the focus on reducing energy consumption has shifted from large motors also to the smaller, embedded applications, where the use of large inverters is no option.

The TMC4671 addresses this market by embedding all necessary control loops in rugged, reliable state-machines. By offloading real-time critical tasks from the processor and software and implementing all control functions in hardware, the TMC4671 offers a crucial benefit: it takes care of all control functions itself. Integrated ADCs, position sensor interfaces, and position interpolators enable a fully functional servo controller for a wide range of servo applications such as robotics, pick and place machines, factory automation, e-mobility, lab automation, and blowers.

“Application layer or bus protocol firmware needs to be updated over the typical lifetime of a product,” explains Trinamics founder and CEO Michael Randt. “Having all real-time tasks embodied in dedicated, proven and reliable hardware, minimizes the effort for the initial firmware development and these updates and thus reduces the total cost of ownership.”

The TMC4671 is designed to rapidly decrease time to market for highly performant servo controllers while maximizing drive efficiency as well as dynamics. With all time critical calculations in hardware, just a few lines of code are necessary to develop a dynamic servo controller.

It offers high switching frequency and controller update rates of up to 100kHz and has filtering and interpolation features like the digital Hall signal interpolation for smoother operation. The IC can work with various encoders such as simple digital or analog Hall sensors over A/B/Z incremental and high-resolution sin/cos analog encoders. Sensors can be flexibly mapped as an input for position and velocity control loops. With its delta sigma current sensing ADCs, the TMC4671 is perfectly suited for isolated delta sigma frontends.

Besides the IC, Trinamic will also offer the TMC4671-BOB and TMC4671-EVAL for Trinamic’s modular Landungsbrücke Evaluation System. Together with Trinamic’s powerful tools including TMCL-IDE, this speeds up development and design-in processes considerably.

Trinamic launches multi axis stepper motor servo module

The TMCM-3351 extends the successful TMCM-351, which has been on the market for more than a decade, by a closed-loop stepper motor servo controller.

TRINAMIC extends its portfolio of TMCM embedded motor control modules. Following the success of the TMCM-351 triple axis board, the TMCM-3351 is designed to be as easy to use as its sibling, but with additional closed-loop stepper motor servo functionality.

Trinamic TMCM-3351The new board drives three 2-phase bipolar stepper motors up to 2.8A. Utilizing Trinamic’s highest performance stepper motor driver IC for external MOSFETs TMC5160 and the dedicated closed-loop motion controller TMC4361, the TMCM-3351 is a cost- and energy-efficient stepper motor servo controller for stepper motors with A/B/N quadrature encoders. Ideal for liquid handling and handling sensitive goods, the S-ramp controller allows for precise and fast positioning.

“If you are looking for an energy efficient drive you are typically looking at servo drives. But, as stepper motors have a considerably higher torque than servo motors of comparable size at low speeds, they often are the solution to get rid of a costly and likewise inefficient gearbox.” explains Trinamic’s CEO Michael Randt. “With our new stepper motor servo drives, you get the best of both worlds. The efficiency of a servo at the cost of a stepper motor.”

Like all other modules by Trinamic, the TMCM-3351 embeds advanced motor and motion control functions, as well as PLC features. Host communication is possible via the RS485, RS232, CAN or USB serial interface using TMCL or the optional CANopen protocol. Together with the free and easy to use TMCL-IDE, the module allows for easy implementation of a standalone program flow and remote-controlled operation.
An integrated SixPoint or advanced S-Ramp generator per axis allows for precise and rapid positioning – even in environments where parameters and target positions must be changed during motion.

Designed for bipolar stepper motors with A/B/N encoders, the TMCM-3351 is available from the end of July. The board has dimensions of 150mm x 10mm.

Features and benefits:

  • 3-axes controller/driver for 2-phase bipolar stepper motors
  • Supply voltage 11…28V
  • Up to 2.8A RMS motor current
  • S-shaped ramps
  • Closed-loop stepper operation
  • TMCL protocol / CANopen option
